To Serve and Protect...

I haven't blogged in quite some time, but I am compelled to this afternoon after learning of terrible news from my home state. A New Jersey police officer was killed execution style while on the job yesterday. He was just 27 years old. He had a fiance and a family that loved him. He never had a chance to defend himself.
It happened during a routine question/answer - the officer pulled over his car to talk to a pedestrian - there was nothing hostile about the situation. Within moments, the pedestrian pulled out a gun and shot the officer three times.
How does something like this happen? Who is this shooter? What made him the way he is? How did he slip through the cracks? Do people blame his parents, his teachers? Or is there no excuse at all?
Where has the respect gone for those who are in uniform? It shouldn't matter whether one serves our country overseas in Iraq or right here in our neighborhood patrolling the streets... they are performing a duty and that is to serve and protect. That deserves our respect.
The Chief of Police in Lakewood, NJ says the young officer was "the best of us" and "had a bright future".
The prosecutor working on the case is a former judge. I have interviewed her several times. She is a lovely woman, but I can tell you this, she is not a woman you want to meet while sitting at the opposing table in a court room.
I have many friends who are now police officers in NJ. It's not an easy job. They risk their lives everyday. i know their Moms too and trust me, they worry like no other. They tell me they do it because they feel it is their calling in life to serve and protect.
My thoughts and prayers today are with the fiance and family of this officer, who are left to mourn the loss of what could have been...
